Delve into Myanmar’s spiritual traditions in Mandalay and be enchanted by Yangon’s blend of old and new. This is the ideal introduction to one of Asia’s most remarkable countries.
Itinerary
day-one
Day 01 – Arrival in Yangon
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your guide who will accompany you as you transfer to your hotel. Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is a relatively quiet and charming city. Its impressive colonial and spiritual heritage makes it one of the most fascinating cities in Southeast Asia. Upon arrival, visit Botahtaung Pagoda is a famous pagoda located in downtown Yangon, Myanmar, near the Yangon River. The pagoda was first built by the Mon around the same time as was Shwedagon Pagoda —according to local belief, over 2500 years ago, and was known as Kyaik-de-att in Mon language. The pagoda is hollow within, and houses what is believed to be a sacred hair of Gautama Buddha. Venture downtown to explore the city centre and its fabulous mix of architecture and sites. The streets are filled with historical buildings many of which have a faded colonial charm not seen elsewhere in Asia. Start at the Post Office – a lovely historic building- and walk to Sule Paya in the middle of downtown. Along the way, pass by Strand Hotel, Mahabandoola Garden and Independence Monument. Then visit Little India and Chinatown, a colorful cacophony of restaurants, temples and markets. Reach Bogyoke Market, formerly known as Scott’s Market, where there is time to browse through dozens of stalls and shops. This is Yangon’s best market for handicrafts and other goods, so be sure to pick up some souvenirs (Note: Market is closed on Mondays and public holidays). Then, explore Chinatown which is one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods. Wander along 17th Street where your first stop is Sit Teik Tong Temple, a clan house tracing its heritage back for 23 generations. The top floor affords incredible river views. The street is filled with Chinese styled terrace houses, food vendors and shops selling fresh produce and dry goods. Take the opportunity to taste some of the offerings. Overnight in Yangon.
day-two
Day 02 – Yangon - Bagan
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for a flight to Bagan (Nyaung Oo). From the 11th to 13th centuries, when Bagan was the capital of Myanmar, rulers constructed thousands of huge stupas and temples, many of which are still standing today on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. On arrival, the journey begins with a visit to an elevated temple with panoramic views of the magnificent plains of Bagan. Continue with a visit to the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda for an introduction into Bagan’s rich history. Then, visit nearby Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi, a cave temple with exquisite Jataka mural paintings, and the elegant Htilominlo Temple, noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations. In the afternoon, pay a visit to a traditional lacquerware workshop and observe the production of one of Myanmar’s best-known handicrafts. Continue to Ananda Temple, an architectural masterpiece and one of Bagan’s most beautiful temples. Built in the early Mon-style, Ananda contains two unique Buddha images whose expressions seem to change depending on the distances from which they are viewed. From here, travel by horse cart for a tour passing Thatbyinnyu, the highest temple in Bagan, Dhammayangyi Temple, a massive temple noted for its remarkable brickwork, and Sulamani Temple. Wrap up the day with an unforgettable sunset over the plains from the upper terrace of one of the temples, then head back to the hotel for the evening. Overnight in Bagan. Distances and journey time: Nyaung U Airport to Old Bagan (9 km): 20 minutes Nyaung U Airport to New Bagan (12 km): 20 minutes
day-three
Day 03 – Bagan – Popa – Toddy Farm lunch
Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel. Then, get a taste of local culture with an excursion to Bagan’s countryside. Travel to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano that rises more than 1500 metres high. Mount Popa is believed to be the home of the Nats, 37 guardian spirits worshipped by the Myanmar people. Arrive at the base of Taung Kalat, a volcanic plug where a massive shrine has been constructed. Get a glimpse into this unique form of worship at a small museum where statues of each nat are displayed. Then climb the stairs to the top of the shrine, joining local pilgrims on the way. On the way, learn more about the nats and the role they play in Myanmar culture. Upon reaching the top, relax and enjoy the views. On the return journey, stop at Shwe Hlaing. Explore this local village which is famous for its toddy palm trees. See how the ingenious farmers use the trees to produce everything from tables to sweet molasses and even strong wine. A local lunch will be served amid the toddy palms, providing a true taste of rural Bagan culture. The return to Bagan, arriving late in the afternoon and return to the hotel for a break from the midday heat. In the evening, you will be picked up by your guide to board a local boat for a slow cruise down the Irrawaddy River. While cruising, observe the lifestyle of fishermen and riverside villagers and take in the unique perspective of Bagan’s temples. Then, return back to your hotel. Overnight in Bagan.
day-four
Day 04 – Bagan - Mandalay
After breakfast in the morning, transfer to the airport for a flight to Mandalay. Upon arrival, begin a sightseeing tour of Mandalay with a visit to Mahamuni Pagoda. This pagoda is home to one of the country’s most revered Buddha images which, over the years, has been covered with so much gold leaf by revellers that it has attained a unique and iconic ‘lumpy’ texture. Get a good look at this famous Buddha image and walk around the temple grounds for a feel of its unique spiritual vibes. Mandalay is well-known for its skilled craftsmen and, while touring traditional workshops, learn more about the city’s cottage industries. Observe the production of wood carvings, kalaga tapestries, and gold-leaf, where the techniques remained unchanged from those used centuries ago to craft items for the Royal Court. This afternoon, continue your tour with a visit to Kuthodaw Pagoda, whose 729 marble stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures have earned it the title ‘World’s Biggest Book’. Continue to Shwenandaw Monastery, the only remaining building from the 19th century Royal Palace. This grand teak wood building is known for its exquisite woodcarving. Then head to the top of Mandalay Hill as the sun begins to set to enjoy magnificent views of the city and Irrawaddy River from the highest vantage point in the area. Overnight in Mandalay. Distances and journey time: Mandalay Airport to Mandalay city centre (41 km): 60 minutes
day-four
Day 05 – Mandalay excursion Sagaing – Ava - Amarapura
After breakfast early, depart for an excursion outside of Mandalay in the morning to explore the former capitals of Ava, Sagaing and Amarapura. First, cross a bridge over the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing. Covered with 600 white-painted pagodas and monasteries, Sagaing Hill is widely regarded as the religious centre of Myanmar. It is home to more than 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centers. Visit pagodas such as Swan Oo Pon Nya Shin and U Min Thone Sae. Then, visit Sagaing’s local market, a typical Burmese market that few tourists visit. Here, one can find a range of items for sale including locally made pottery, silver and other handicrafts. We will also stop at a small pottery village to see various processes of making the ubiquitous water pots found throughout Myanmar. Then continue south of the city to Ava, the Burmese capital from the 14th to 18th centuries, where a short ferry ride will head across the river to a waiting horse and carriage. While taking this charming form of transportation, visit the old wooden Bagaya Monastery and the remains of the Royal Palace and Fort. There are many small villages located amid Ava’s ruins and, while traveling by horse and cart, get a glimpse of local life in the Burmese countryside. Return toward the city and stop at Amarapura, a former capital whose name means ‘City of Immortality’. First visit a silk weaving workshop which produces exquisite handmade products. After touring this tranquil site, continue to U Bein Bridge for a walk along this 200-year-old teak wood bridge. The bridge was constructed of 984 teak wood posts that were once part of the deserted Inwa Palace. At 1.2 kilometers in length, it’s the world’s longest teak wood construction. That’s not what the bridge is most famous for, though. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, get ready for a truly unforgettable experience. The entire area becomes bathed in a vivid golden light. As traditionally-dressed locals pass over the bridge, be sure to snap some photos of the bridge’s iconic silhouette -widely considered to be one of Asia’s best photo opportunities. Afterwards, head back to the hotel in Mandalay. Overnight in Mandalay. Distances and journey time: Mandalay-Amarapura (13km):30minutes Mandalay-Sagaing (21 km): 50 minutes
day-four
Day 06 – Mandalay – Heho – Kalaw
After breakfast, transfer to Mandalay Airport for a flight to Heho. Receive a warm welcome from the guide and driver upon arrival at Heho Airport. From there transfer to Kalaw, a former British hill station (approximately 50 km). The scenic drive heads through the heart of the Shan State, passing pine forests, rolling hills and small towns along the way. Kalaw is a charming little town with a mix of local and colonial-style houses. The slightly higher elevation means that the air temperature is usually much cooler than elsewhere in the country. The cool, misty climate is perfect for growing "English" vegetables and fruits like lettuce and strawberries. The local market here is especially colorful, as are the old Tudor mansions that were used by the English colonists to escape the heat of the plains. There are numerous Indians and Gurkhas still living here, so you might enjoy a meal of warm chapattis and dhal. Highlights will include Bamboo Strips wish fulfilling pagoda, Thein Taung Paya, a temple perched on the hill overlooking the main road. Overnight in Kalaw.
day-four
Day 07 – Kalaw – Nyaung Shwe – Inle Lake
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast or, if time allows, head to the local market in Kalaw, which takes place every five days -be sure to ask to make sure it’s a market day beforehand. Afterwards, meet with the driver and a scenic drive leads to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway village to Inle Lake. Along the way, stop at the wooden Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery which features beautiful carvings and a collection of Buddha images. We will also stop in Nyaung Shwe for a short walk around town and visit to the colorful market if it is being held that day. Upon reaching the edges of Inle Lake, board a private motorboat to head out to Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most spectacular sights. Pass villages built on stilts over the lake, inhabited by the local Intha people. Observe the famous leg-rowing fishermen and see their floating gardens built up from strips of water hyacinth and mud and anchored to the bottom with bamboo poles. Visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the lake’s main sanctuary, which contains five sacred Buddha images covered in gold leaf. Explore the local crafts of Inle Lake with a stop at the weaving village of Inpawkhone and a cheroot factory, where traditional Burmese cigars are made by hand. If time permits, there may be time to enjoy a short walk through one of the lakeside villages. Overnight on Inle Lake.
day-four
Day 08 – Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon
After breakfast, drive to the Heho Airport for the flight to Yangon. Upon arrival to Yangon, first visit to National Museum is the one of the national museum of Burmese art, history and culture in Myanmar. Founded in 1952, the five-story museum has an extensive collection of ancient artifacts, ornaments, works of art, inscriptions and historic memorabilia, related to history, culture and civilization of Burmese people. Afternoon, visit Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, home to a 70m long reclining Buddha. A visit to Kyaukhtatgyi provides a great overview of Buddhism with murals depicting the life of Buddha, and a statue carved with traditional symbols. Many locals often gather here to pay homage and pray. Continue to a local tea shop for a chance to experience an integral part of Burmese life: drinking tea! Select from an array of snacks and enjoy a coffee or tea while sitting amongst businessmen, friends and families who gather at the tea shop to socialize or conduct business. Continue to Shwedagon Pagoda the most revered Buddhist temple in Myanmar. Although the origins of the pagoda are unclear, local legend has it that the original structure was built 2,500 years ago then renovated several times before taking its current shape in the 15th century. The 8-sided central stupa is 99m tall, gilded with gold leaf and is surrounded by 64 smaller stupas. Follow the guide’s lead while touring this massive complex and learn why it’s so revered among locals. Overnight in Yangon.

Nuwara Eliya - The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against a beautiful backdrop of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the island, but it is really just like a spring day in England although the temperature does drop at night. All around Nuwara Eliya you will see evidence of the British influence. Most of the houses are like country cottages or Queen Ann style mansions.
Tea Factory or Tea Processing Center. There are hundreds of Tea factories in the Central Highlands, the Uva region and in the Southern parts of Sri Lanka. Some of these factories are situated in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, surrounded by indeed serene green gardens of tea. A casual tourist to this island cannot call his visit complete if he does not pay a visit to some of them. Visitors to any of these Centers are normally treated with typical Sri Lankan courtesy and normally given an educative, guided tour on the various stages of tea manufacturing process. Next visit, Seetha Amman Temple which is located approximately 1km from Hakgala Botanical Garden. The temple is located in the village called “Seetha Eliya”. This place is believed to be the place where Sita was held captive by king Ravana in Lanka. Afterwards commence a city tour in Nuwara Eliya. The city was founded by Samuel Baker, the discoverer of Lake Albert and the explorer of the Nile in 1846. Nuwara Eliya's climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, was then called the Little England. It was also a hill country retreat where the British colonialists could immerse in their pastimes. Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Queen's Cottage, General's House, Grand Hotel, Galway Forest Lodge, Town Post Office and even new hotels are often built and furnished in the colonial style. Anyone who visits the city can wallow in its nostalgia of bygone days by visiting these landmark buildings. Many private homes still maintain their old English-style lawns and gardens. Optional boat ride on the Gregory’s lake or Horseback ride. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically. Afternoon, 4 x 4 jeep safari at Yala National Park.
Yala – A heaven for Fauna both indigenous and migrant. Bird concentrations are by the Lagoons/Salvers.
